Black History Month is a time when we as a people can take the time out to recognize what the individuals before us fought for. Medgar Evers was a native of Mississippi born in 1925. Like many African Americans living in the rural areas of the south he had to travel by foot to high school. He graduated high school and college what is now know as Alcorn State University.

In honor of Medgar Evers life and legacy here's a few things you should know according to history.com

1. As a Civil Rights Leader he fought to end racial injustice.

2. He was the NAACP's first field secretary in the south.

3. One of Evers first assignments was investigating the murder of Emmett Till.

Evers was shot just shortly after President Kennedy delivered a speech on Civil Rights.
